From Dubrovnik Cruise Port
Walking Dubrovnik City Walls from Cruise Port
Two kilometres of ramparts — the definitive Dubrovnik experience above terracotta roofs.
Distance
2.5 km from Gruž to Pile Gate entrance
Travel time
10–15 min taxi, then wall circuit on foot
Time needed
Allow 1.5–2.5 hours including ticket queue
Dubrovnik's city walls form a complete circuit around the Old Town — roughly 2 km with minimal shade and spectacular Adriatic views. For many cruise passengers this is the single must-do sight after stepping ashore at Gruž.
Cruise ships dock at Gruž (Gruz) commercial cruise terminal, about 2.5 km east of Dubrovnik Old Town's Pile Gate. Taxis to the walls take 10–15 minutes; port shuttle buses and local services run in season; a waterfront walk takes 25–35 minutes. Build a 60–90 minute buffer before all-aboard — summer queues at the city walls and cable car can slow your return to the terminal.
The full circuit takes 60–90 minutes at a moderate pace with photo stops. Enter at Pile Gate (near Onofrio's Fountain) or Ploče Gate; one-way sections occasionally apply in peak season. Ticket queues at Pile can exceed 30 minutes when three ships are in port — buy online or join a guided wall tour with skip-the-line access.
The walls involve steps, uneven stone and full sun exposure. Not suitable for severe mobility limitations. Combine with Old Town walking the same half-day — walls first while legs are fresh, then Stradun lunch below.
